Set pieces in the Champions League: where knockout ties are won
In tight ties, the set piece is the most reliable chance factory. We analyse the routines that keep recurring at the highest level.
A set piece is the only situation in football where the coach controls the starting position of all 22 players. That makes it the most profitable place to invest training time.
Three recurring routines
- Blocking runs: two players cut off the path of the target player's marker.
- Delivery to the second zone: the ball drops behind the crowd, at the far post.
- The short corner: it forces a zonal defence to step out and breaks its structure.
Zonal or man marking
Zonal marking covers space better but is vulnerable to runs from deep. Man marking solves the movement but suffers against blocks. Most elite teams play a hybrid: zonal at the near post, man marking on the two most dangerous headers of the ball.
